Coming out on March 11 with le plurali, Caterina Liverani’s book Lady Cinema va in Corea – guida femminista al k-cinema will be presented at GO by the author, in conversation with sociolinguist Vera Gheno.
This volume is a spin-off that takes readers on a passionate and rigorous journey into the beating heart of South Korean cinema and culture.
The Book
From the Oscar triumph of Parasite by Bong Joon-ho, to the cult classic Lady Vendetta by Park Chan-wook, and the global success of series such as Mask Girl—which have redefined the collective imagination and challenged beauty standards and social hierarchies—South Korea is today one of the most vibrant creative laboratories on the international scene.
The book unveils the behind-the-scenes of the feminist and queer revolution currently reshaping k-cinema and Korean seriality, placing non-conforming bodies, marginalized identities, and new narratives at the center. It also includes an extensive filmography for readers who wish to explore Korean cinema more deeply.
From pioneer Park Nam-ok to the female directors now triumphing at international festivals, Liverani draws a generational map of bold storytellers. The volume explores how Korean auteur cinema is reclaiming the gaze, exposing patriarchal structures, and rewriting the rules of representation.
Alongside film analysis and explorations of pop culture, special mention goes to the chapter dedicated to the Korea loved by Michela Murgia.
