THE ENCHANTERS by James Ellroy
Lunedì 13/05 - ore 18:30

At Giunti Odeon, a special event organized by La città dei lettori: James Ellroy, a giant of contemporary literature and master of noir, will present his new book The Enchanters (Einaudi), accompanied by Gianni Santucci from Corriere della Sera and translator Simona Caldera.

The book:

In Los Angeles, on a sultry night, Marilyn Monroe dies of an overdose and loneliness. On the same day, the police free a kidnapped starlet. There's a connection between the two stories, or so thinks a corrupt detective with a passion for drugs and the art of blackmail.

When it comes to delving into the murky depths, the right person to call is Freddy Otash. He spied on Marilyn on behalf of Jimmy Hoffa, the controversial leader of the truckers' union, and now the police have tasked him with investigating her death. It's a delicate matter because very powerful people, even in Washington, could be involved in the disappearance of the world's most famous actress. For some obscure reason, perhaps related to love, Freddy decides to go all the way. Even if it means shattering an icon, even if it turns the dream of the city of angels into a nightmare.
