Doctor Strangelove 4K (original version with Italian subtitles)

Director : Stanley Kubrick

Cast : Peter Sellers, George C. Scott, Keenan Wynn, Slim Pickens, Sterling Hayden

Durata : 01:40

One of Stanley Kubrick’s greatest masterpieces – and one of the greatest in the entire history of cinema – returns to the big screen at the Giunti Odeon: Dr Strangelove. General Ripper is in command of the American air base at Burpelson, and orders the 34 B-52 bombers in flight to carry out ‘Plan R’, a nuclear counter-attack against the Soviet Union. British Colonel Mandrake (an unforgettable Peter Sellers) accidentally discovers that there has been no Russian attack to retaliate against, but Ripper remains determined to carry out his plan because he wants to finally eliminate the communist threat: he therefore cuts off all communication with the outside world, barricading himself inside the base alongside Mandrake. President Muffley and the Pentagon become aware of what is happening, but, not knowing the secret code to call off the attack, they decide to send in the infantry to storm the military base, which has become the psychopathic general’s stronghold. In this regard, General Turgidson criticises the President for his pacifist stance and advises him to go ahead with Ripper’s plan. At the Pentagon, Dr Strangelove (Peter Sellers), a former Nazi scientist in charge of nuclear development, explains to the President how the bomb works, whilst the base is stormed and Ripper commits suicide rather than reveal the code. Mandrake nevertheless manages to decipher it from some paperwork, halts the operation and recalls the bombers – all except King Kong, an experienced pilot whom they cannot locate either on radar or by radio, and who is heading resolutely towards his target, unaware that he could trigger a catastrophic nuclear chain reaction. One of the few masterpieces of political satire in the history of cinema, reflecting the apocalyptic nightmares of the early 1960s. Kubrick’s wildest and least restrained film, featuring Peter Sellers in three roles at the height of his histrionics. It failed to win any of the four Oscars for which it was nominated. Based on the novel Red Alert (1958) by Peter George, who co-wrote the screenplay with Terry Southern and the director.
