Ten years after its release, one of the most beloved cult films of contemporary Korean cinema is coming to the big screen at Giunti Odeon for the first time, in collaboration with Florence Korea Film Fest: Train to Busan, directed by Yeon Sang-ho. Seok-wu is a financial manager who is separated from his wife: his young daughter, Su-an, often feels neglected by him and prefers her mother’s company. On the train on which the two are travelling, to take Su-an to her mother who lives in Busan, a girl boards who has strange wounds on her body, resembling animal bites. She will soon turn into a zombie, and all hell will break loose on the train to Busan, the only city still uninfected... 453 kilometres to go. 453 kilometres to stay alive.

“No one is born good or bad. Often, when tragedy strikes, many people end up on one side or the other purely by chance. Many others, however, simply blame bad luck. It’s sad to have to admit it, but this attitude – this shirking of individual responsibility – is quite prevalent in South Korea today. And, whilst Train to Busan is a genre film, I’d like it to prompt viewers to reflect on this issue. After all, I chose zombies precisely because they can embody various social nuances: they aren’t monsters, they’re simply human beings infected and transformed by a virus!” (Yeon Sang-ho).
